Father’s Day
Tuesday, June 26th, 2007
It’s June 20th, the day we have our first child. It’s a pretty significant moment, and it was for us. Sam had just seen his precious darling (me) go through 15 or so hours of intense labor and all the struggles that go into producing offspring, and he was moved. I know he was.
We got the nurse to take a picture of our new family all together on the delivery bed. Our son was finally with us and we would begin life as a family, so many joys, expectations and challenges awaited us.
The next day we went home eager to begin our new life. We also had to tell our friends the good news, we had finally joined that blessed crowed called Parents.
Sam was especially anxious to share this information with the world, I was happy to have him take care of it, after all I had a baby to take care of now. So, what does he do?
Sam sends an email to everyone he knows of the picture of us in the hospital, the one the kind nurse took of us on the delivery bed, our first family photo, just a slightly altered version, a version where we’re holding a small black baby. Yup!
The message read “Here’s a picture of all of us at the hospital.”
Well, it was a good way to get a lot of responses. We met in Kenya, so to a lot of people it just “made sense.” I’m not sure if they actually thought that if you were in Africa when you got pregnant your babies were automatically African, sort of like “made in Africa” or something.
Some emails said “we didn’t know it was so and so’s baby” (yeah, cause it wasn’t)
Sam’s mom didn’t want to tell anyone that her grandson was born so that they wouldn’t ask for pictures, ha.
Anyway, it was pretty funny, funny that so many people actually bought it. Course, the ones who really knew Sam were just amused, that’s what they expected, some different approach to the situation, as Sam is famous for. I’m sure it’s something that his kids will always love about him, his funny, unique take on things.
I guess he got some of his ya yas out with that small prank, because he did settle down to be just about the best father I could have ever hoped our kids would have.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, HONEY!
And happy father’s day to all you wonderful dads out there.
And, Dad, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! I LOVE YOU!
PS I wrote this before we left for the PEP hoping to post it on Father’s Day, but we didn’t have very good internet there. Anyway, Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads out there.
