Chocolate rum balls

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

This is a very easy recipe to make, but it quickly becomes a favorite. I usually use rum, but I just made them with brandy and they came out just as good, so I guess it’s up to you, whatever liquor you’d like to use. I don’t use any measurements, you just need to get a consistency you can work with. These are the proportions I used this time, but you really do have a lot of room to vary it.
36oz Oreo cookies (or chocolate sandwich cookies, don’t have to be brand loyal)

12oz Dark chocolate bar, chopped coarsley
2cups walnuts

1 1/2 cupsmaraschino cherries

1 1/2 cups rum

Blend the oreos with the rum, you’ll have to do it in batches. Grind the walnuts untill fairly ground but not powder. It’s okay to have a few chunks. Chop the cherries, chop the chocolate. Mix it all in a large bowl and roll into balls. If you want to be fancy about it you can use the candy size muffin cups and pop a rum ball in each one. they look pretty festive and are quite rich. You should chill them until firm. Enjoy!
